Rigo 23 to create large-scale projection at 01SJ

Artist Rigo 23 was just in San Jose working on plans for large-scale projection project downtown that will be presented in the evening hours during the Biennial from September 16-19, 2010.  This project will be Rigo 23’s first foray into large-scale projection!

If you live in San Francisco, you may be familiar with his well-known painted murals One Tree and Sky/Ground and Innercity/Home.

Rigo 23 is very familiar with downtown San Jose and the political history of the city. If you’re nearby San Jose State University, you should definitely wander onto campus to see Rigo 23’s sculpture that depicts the moment when Tommie Smith and John Carlos took a stand for human rights on the victory podium at the 1968 Olympics.

To make the work, he used  3D scanning technology and computer-assisted virtual imaging to take actual full-body scans of the athletes and then cast the figures of Smith and Carlos in bronze, which was then covered in hand-cut ceramic tiles.
