Sol Design Lab/Bike Zoo

Monarch Butterfly Bike Puppet

Butterfly Bike Monarch Butterfly Bike Puppet

ZER01 is excited to announce Sol Design Lab/Bike Zoo as the recipients of the Green Prix Workshop Grant for the 2010 01SJ Biennial.  Their project Powering Flight: Nature’s Influence on Mobility will be a spectacular addition to the Green Prix and the numerous workshops going on in South Hall as a part of the Out of the Garage, into the World programming.

During the two weeks prior to the Biennial, they will be hosting workshops in South Hall ranging from DIY bicycle puppetry to creating electric charging stations. The outcome of the workshops will result in building several larger than life Monarch Butterfly bicycle puppets that will participate in the Green Prix. Additionally they will be bringing their SolarPump to the Green Prix, an electric charging station for everything from bikes to iphones. “As an urban intervention, the SolarPump is designed to help people re-imagine the future of transportation by showcasing solar electric charging stations as part of the future for carbon-free cities, leaving gas mobility as a thing of the past.”

We are very excited to have Sol Design Lab/Bike Zoo be a part of the Green Prix!

01SJ Artists to speak at Leonardo LASER events

Starting last month, one 01SJ Biennial artist will be featured as a speaker in the monthly LASER (Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous) series, organized by Leonardo ISAST. The series, which is currently chaired by piero scaruffi, is a really interesting  local forum for presenting art and science projects underway in the Bay Area that are creative, original and interdisciplinary in nature. Each evening, free of charge and open to the public, presents up to four artists, scientists, philosophers, historians, inventors and scholars.

Tonight’s LASER begins at 7pm at the  SETI Institute (515 N. Whisman Road, Mountain View, California) and includes a presentation by 01SJ ‘San Jose Urban Game’ artist Ken Eklund where he will be talking about ZOROP, an urban game he is creating with Annette Mees that was commissioned by ZER01 for the 2010 01SJ Biennial.

Thanks to Charles Lee and Jess Austin from BIOS Design Collective for doing a great job presenting at last month’s LASER, and stay tuned for Mona El-Khafif and the CCA UrbanLAB from the School of Architecture at California College of the Arts who will be speaking at the LASER on May 10th in San Francisco!

2010 01SJ Media Sponsors

With each new Biennial the expectation is that we grow; we get better, have more resources and can ultimately achieve more.  That certainly seems to be the case this year; having an incredible team that includes staff, interns, volunteers and consultants – makes all the difference in the world.  Not that previous teams weren’t amazing as well, but experience has given us an edge this year.  To wit, our media sponsorships.  To date they include:

A lovely logo soup if ever there was one.
