ZER01 partners seeking ideas from artist-lead teams to create “Climate Clock”

The Climate Clock is a multi-year endeavor that will culminate with the production of a major art installation that measures and tracks climate change. The Climate Clock Initiative is a collaboration between FUSE: CADRE/Montalvo Arts Center Artist Research Residency Initiative, 1stACT and the City of San Jose Public Art program in cooperation with ZER01. All organizations are in the preliminary stages of executing this project, which will be installed in downtown San Jose.

A colloquium for experts who will help shape the project is planned for June 9 and 10 following 01SJ in downtown San Jose. The colloquium is by invitation only, but plans are underway to make proceedings open to the public via a streaming web presence. Also, a call for artists’ ideas has been released. Please read the call at http://www.sanjoseculture.org/downloads/SJClimateClock_RFP.pdf.

Fundraising is also underway. We welcome your support. Please e-mail all inquiries to climateclock@sanjoseca.gov. More information will be made available to the general public in the near future. Stay tuned!

A formal announcement of the Festival programming will be made on January 30 and be available on the 01SJ website: http://01SJ.org.

CURATORIAL INTERN: FESTIVAL
ZERO1 is seeking a curatorial intern to work with Steve Dietz, the Artistic Director of ZER01 and the 01SJ Festival. Responsibilities will range widely but be focused on supporting all aspects of the exhibition and events programming, which includes a major international exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Art, commissioned public art throughout downtown San Jose, 5 days of performances and presentations, and the Future Films program, among other efforts.

Amy Franceschini collaboration showcased in MOMA’s Design and the Elastic Mind

The “Lunchbox Laboratory” a collaboration between Amy Franceschini (of Futurefarmers) and the Biological Sciences Team, National Renewable Energy Lab, is a prototype art project for a distributed research laboratory that allows for young scientists to test collected algae strains. The algae is collected and tested to confirm its function as a renewable energy form that can produce biodiesel to power automobiles and other devices as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Lunchbox Laboratory will be included in MOMA’s Design and the Elastic Mind, a survey of the latest developments in the field of design. It focuses on designers’ ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and social mores, changes that will demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior, and convert them into objects and systems that people understand and use.

The exhibition will highlight examples of successful translation of disruptive innovation, examples based on ongoing research, as well as reflections on the future responsibilities of design. Of particular interest will be the exploration of the relationship between design and science and the approach to scale. The exhibition will include objects, projects, and concepts offered by teams of designers, scientists, and engineers from all over the world, ranging from the nanoscale to the cosmological scale. The objects range from nanodevices to vehicles, from appliances to interfaces, and from pragmatic solutions for everyday use to provocative ideas meant to influence our future choices.
