CALL FOR PROPOSALS
DEADLINE: MARCH 21, 2010

Knowledge Hacking is an experimental research and exhibition project organized by the Worth Ryder Art Gallery (WRAG), Department of Art Practice, UC Berkeley, as a parallel program with ZER01: The Art and Technology Network. WRAG invites proposals for short-term residencies for independent artists and researchers pursuing art-science collaborations with departments on the UC campuses at Berkeley, Santa Cruz and Davis. Supported collaborations will commence in April and will be presented as a discursive exhibition of work in progress at the Worth Ryder to coincide with Build Your Own World, the 2010 01SJ Biennial, in San Jose from September 16-19, 2010. Tentative dates for the exhibition are September 15-October 16.
Applications must include a project narrative (250-500 words), contact information and biographies for lead collaborators (including at least one UC affiliate), a pilot-phase budget of no more than $1000, a statement of commitment from a UC-affiliated partner, and 5-10 images (which may include concept art for the proposed project and examples of collaborators’ past work).  For more information and to apply please EMAIL all required documents in PDF format to Anuradha Vikram, WRAG Curator, at avikram[at]berkeley.edu by March 21.

Open call deadlines extended!

We’ve just extended the deadline to submit proposals for the 01SJ Biennial workshops and micro-grants.

The new deadline to submit proposals for workshops related to Green Prix and Out of the Garage, Into the World is March 29, 2010.

The extended deadline to submit proposals for micro-grants to participate in AbsoluteZER0 and Green Prix is April 14, 2010.

All of the updated information related to open calls is available here: http://zero1.org/01sj/opencalls
(I recommend downloading the pdf files again)

Thank you to all the artists who have already applied. We will be reviewing proposals as they are received, but we decided to extend the deadlines because we will be announcing additional open calls shortly and felt it was necessary to give everyone the opportunity to see the entire range of  calls available before any individual deadlines passed. More details will be posted soon!

Open Call posted for Future Films: Mobile Media Shorts

For the 2010 01SJ Biennial we are collaborating with SF Shorts: San Francisco International Festival of Short Films to issue an open call for 5-minute shorts interpreting the theme Build Your Own World that were shot using a cell phone, flip video camcorder, or other mobile media device. You can interpret this theme literally or figuratively, seriously or humorously to envision how mobile technology can contribute to positive social change. Selected films will be featured at both SF Shorts and the 2010 01SJ Biennial and cash prize is available for top selection.

And on that note, proposals for the workshops and micro-grants are starting to roll in. The workshop call ends on February 15th, and the micro-grants on March 8th, so you still have time to send in proposals!

Please see the open calls page here for more information on  the current 01SJ Biennial open calls.

ZER01’s ZSalons

Last night ZER01 hosted our 1st ZSalon! Over 60 people came out to the ZER01 headquarters to socialize, meet the Climate Clock finalists and of course enjoy some wine. Each Climate Clock finalist team presented both previous works and their winning proposals for the Climate Clock Initiative. The night was filled with great interaction and conversation both physically and digitally–as we broadcasted the talks on UStream. If you missed it check us out next month, as we will be hosting ZSalons every fourth Wednesday. February 24th will be Xavier Cortada a Miami-based artist. Hope to see you there!

Red Cross Wearable Art Competition

Are you a fashion designer, high tech designer, or an artist who has designs up your sleeve just waiting to get out? Then pour your talent into the inaugural Red Cross Wearable Art competition. The American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter is inviting artists to create wearable art that surrounds the “theme of emergency preparedness prevention and response for a show of art with a life-saving message.”

Designer Applications and Design Sketches or Design Plans are due February 19, 2010. Finalists will receive amazing perks including having their design presented at the Hero’s Celebration at the Santa Clara Marriott on May 8th.  The designers will also receive two tickets to the black-tie event and the finalist’s creations will walk the runways during San Francisco and San Jose Fashion weeks.

Find more details at these websites. Good Luck!

Press Preview Preparations

March 15 and 18 are looming large on my calendar; that’s when we unveil the 2010 01SJ Biennial programming to media on both coasts.  It’s exciting and nerve wracking because of the amount of coordination that needs managing from finding caterers and setting menus to determining how best to project the presentations – LCD screens or huge projection screens.  It’s all in a day’s work, so to speak, and should turn out brilliantly.  At the very least, it will be great to get ZER01 in front of NY media; with the exception of Jori Finkel from the New York Times, it’ll be a first for us.  Ah, ain’t growing up grand?

I recently had the chance to go on a “hard hat” tour of the new terminal that is still being built at the Norm Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. Within the new terminal the San José Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program (OCA)  is managing a changing art and technology public art program to commission artwork that will reflect the character of the Silicon Valley and provide an engaging introduction to the region. As part of this program, ZER01 has been invited to curate two large display cabinets. We are treating these as “Cabinets of Curiosity” or wunderkammern, which will include “small wonders” at the intersection of art, technology and digital culture.

One cabinet will be curated by ZER01 with a collection of projects that tie together art, technology, and the Bay Area. The display case will be designed by local designer Shona Kitchen and will contain works by mostly local artists, with a few national and international artists included as well.

The second cabinet will be a commissioned project by the Seattle-based, multidisciplinary artist collective SuttonBeresCuller. They will transform the display case and it’s intersecting column into a literal cabinet of curiosities using components drawn from the materials and technologies that have made Silicon Valley what it is today such as computer chips and parts.

The cabinets are located in the non-ticketed area between the ticketing lobby and arrivals, and will be installed in May 2010 and remain on view for a period of two years—be sure to check them out once the new terminal opens!

Four open calls posted for the 2010 01SJ Biennial

We just posted four open calls for California-based artists to participate in the 2010 01SJ Biennial (more to come).

http://zero1.org/01sj/opencalls

We’ve also added pages to the website that share more information related to AbsoluteZER0, Green Prix, and Out of the Garage, Into the World–three exciting programs that offer widespread opportunities for participation during the 01SJ Biennial.

You can read more about the open calls here and please be sure to download the pdf files posted on each open call page for additional details.

Artists Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark to build theater inside South Hall

South Hall is really big. 80,000 square feet big. So thank goodness we have some big projects on the horizon. For the 3rd 01SJ Biennial, ZER01 is commissioning artists Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark to build a theater inside South Hall of the San Jose Convention Center using salvaged materials.

Todd Chandler (l) and Jeff Stark (r) inside South Hall

Todd and Jeff were in town just long enough to scout materials,  take a few measurements, and start thinking big. Both Todd and Jeff are working on advanced degrees from the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  More about them:

Todd is an artist, musician, and filmmaker who is currently working on the feature-length film FLOOD TIDE. FLOOD TIDE is an experimental narrative film that was shot amidst the artist Swoon’s 2008 Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea project http://www.switchbacksea.org/, in which seven homespun boats were built and crewed by an eclectic group of artists and performers. The primary cast includes the bands Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor, members of which were actual crew on the homespun boats. The bands will be collaborating to write, perform and record the film’s musical score.

Jeff Stark is an artist, journalist, and the editor of Nonsense NYC, a weekly email list and discriminating resource for independent art and senseless culture in New York City. He has also conceived of and directed several street events, such the Idiotarod races in New York, and wrote and directed IRT: A Tragedy in Three Stations, a theatrical production that was staged within the New York City subway system.
